OFFERING CUSTOMER BENEFITS IN THE MANUFACTURING AND AFTERMARKET ENVIRONMENT,
Special Handling refers to the numerous individual packaging solutions on offer from Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, as well as additional part identification options. These include protective packaging or customized replacement part kits, but also such streamlining measures as reducing the number of vendors or the amount of warehouse stock.

Customer-focused

Marc Hellerich, Manager Logistics Centre Europe at Trelleborg Sealing Solutions, says the Special Handling offering is about: “Making our customers’ business easier by optimizing the entire value chain from the warehouse door onwards.”

In terms of additional packaging solutions beyond the standard offering, Special Handling offers individually bagged and tagged seals in printable bags as well as reusable transparent plastic tubes that are easy to store and use in automated environments. Another special service is kitting – ready-to-ship sets of individually packed seals.

Carina Löhmann, Logistics Engineer within Global Supply Chain Management at Trelleborg, proudly describes the twenty-year-old collaboration with Liebherr, a global manufacturer of earthmoving machinery:
“Trelleborg Sealing Solutions puts together replacement part kits, including our seals, scrapers and wear rings, ready for dispatch to wherever a Liebherr hydraulic piston has failed. These are boxed in the customer’s familiar yellow cartons, together with a packing list, and then sealed with a security label.” Around 23,000 of these kits are delivered to the Liebherr warehouse each year, helping to keep downtime to a minimum.

OPTIMIZED PART IDENTIFICATION, ASSEMBLY AND QUALITY ASSURANCE

1 - SPECIAL MARKING Individual marking and engraving for easy item recognition and tracking
2 - SURFACE TREATMENT Coating and surface modifications for elastomer or plastic products to optimize assembly and application.
3 - AUTOMATED INSPECTION Fully automated and highly flexible visual inspection of seal dimensions and surface properties

Saving time and resources

When it comes to supplying seals for use in harsh storage or production environments. Special Handling is able to supply skin top packaging. Here, individual items or kits are shrink-wrapped onto cardboard backing, remaining resistant to such environmental conditions as dust and water, with the contents clearly visible and cleanly packed. Since the cardboard backing is printable, these packages can be tailor-made, bearing the customer’s name and logo.

Marc points out the added advantage that this, as with kitting, it means the customer can log, store and retrieve the package from the warehouse as a complete item.

“This saves the time and resources normally spent putting the individual parts together, which represents real added value for the customer.”

Advanced marking and surface treatment options

With regards to optimized part identification, Trelleborg offes its customers special marking. This includes individual inkjet marking and laser engraving of part numbers or references for easy recognition and tracking. This marking can then be used as a special identifier for specific parts for sourcing and enables automated robotic recognition for safety-critical applications.

“Since our O-Rings all look similar, colored dot marking benefits our clients by differentiating the seals prior to manufacturing,” explains Marc, “meaning we can reduce the risk of mistakes during the assembly process.”

To further optimize assembly and applications, Specialn Handling has additional surface treatments available, namely coating and surface modifications for Tre lleborg’s elastomer or plastic products. These include dry surface finishes for a permanent reduction in friction and wear, dry coating solutions for automated assembly, as well as special powders, waxes and oils for ease of separation and handling during the production process. Finally, for those customers with additional quality assurance requirements, Special Handling is able to offer a fully automated and highly flexible visual inspection of seal dimensions and surface properties.

More To Come

“There will be more of these services to come,” notes Alexander Stapf, Director Global Logistics at Trelleborg. “We develop our innovative ideas in close cooperation with our customers to provide a maximum benefit for assembly, mounting and handling processes on the client side. As our philosophy is about knowing and meeting our customers' needs, we're open to any challenges they might have.”
