Latest developments in the Busak+Shamban, piston and rod sealingsystem, known as Turcon® Stepseal®, have helped to maintain thesolution as a primary choice for engineers requiringuncompromising, proven sealing performance throughout hydrauliccylinder applications.

Specified by fluid power engineers for its high sealingefficiency in cylinder applications, Turcon® Stepseal® has longoffered a low-friction, non stick-slip, easy installation pistonand rod sealing solution for the hydraulics industry,worldwide.

An industry trend dictated by economics has been the increaseduse of lower-cost cylinders, with greater hardware tolerances. Inresponse to this, Busak+Shamban development engineers refined thegeometry of Turcon® Stepseal®, to effectively operate in cylinderswith these increased tolerances and radial clearances.

While developing the profile of Turcon® Stepseal® relating toextrusion, Busak+Shamban recognized an opportunity to introducefurther refinements that would improve the seal’s generalperformance. A lengthy program of development employingspecialist FEM techniques, sealing simulation and applicationtesting within the company’s R&D centers, resulted in aredeveloped Turcon® Stepseal®.

The redesigned sealing system, known as Turcon® Stepseal® 2Kcan be used as a single seal element or in tandem, forreciprocating hydraulic rod and piston systems. In practice, thenew seal profile, incorporating a high-lift rear chamber, achievesan advanced hydrodynamic back-pumping effect. This provides highleakage control, while the design of the O-Ring relief chamberreduces the load on the counter surface, thereby increasing overallextrusion resistance. Resultant lower friction provides lowerenergy consumption and an extended service life in addition to thedesign capability to cope with increased radial clearances,leading  to cost reductions in hardware engineering.

Dependant on the Turcon® material selected, Turcon® Stepseal® 2Kcan operate at a maximum pressure of 80MPa and is available to fitstandard ISO groove sizes, from 3-2600mm (0.118-102.326 in) for rod sealing andfrom 8-2700mm (0.315-106.299 in) as a piston seal.

Turcon® Stepseal® 2K is patented in the U.S., with approvedpatented applications in the EU and various local applicationsoutside the U.S. and EU.
