Turcon®MF - reducing the friction in food, pharmaceutical and chemical processing

Elastomer seals, when thoroughly degreased by CIP and SIP cleaning regimes, have a tendency to stick. This reduces performance, leads to seals degrading rapidly and to the possibility of contamination. Seal developer and manufacturer Busak+Shamban has solved this problem with their Turcon®MF materials, specially developed for use in static, dynamic and semi-dynamic hygienic processing applications.

Equipment used in processing applications for food, drinks, pharmaceutical and hygienic chemicals must remain contamination free at all times. Traditionally, elastomer material has been used for sealing the joints and connectors of this processing equipment. The requirement for producers to cleanse tanks and equipment employing CIP (cleaning in place) using harsh chemicals and SIP (sterilisation in place) with super-steam, means seal surfaces are completely degreased. This results in a dry-running condition at start up, meaning the elastomer seals tend to stick to the surfaces they seal. The friction forces, created in dry-running, are further increased when there has been a long system shutdown and can result in an even higher co-efficient of friction (α=0.8).

Dry-running and high friction causes seals to deteriorate rapidly and reduces performance. Of special concern in hygienic applications is the possibility of contamination of media processed by particles from the seal, which can become detached after sticking to seal surfaces.

Turcon®MF is a proprietary PTFE based material specially developed for use in static and dynamic hygienic processing applications, where CIP and SIP are in use. Formulated by worldwide sealing developer and manufacturer, Busak+Shamban, three compounds are available within the Turcon®MF range. Each is formulated to suit different applications and all available in a variety of standard and custom product types, for static, linear and rotary application. The seal types that are available, using Turcon®MF, include: Turcon®Variseal, Turcon®Varilip, Turcon®Glydring®, guides, bushes, scrapers, excluders and custom made product.

Chemical resistance and material characteristics:

With virtually universal chemical resistance, Turcon®MF is compliant with FDA regulations and the EU Plastics Directive.

Material capabilities:

Turcon®MF1 - performs to 260°C, low friction, for static applications with limited movements.

Turcon®MF3 - performs to 260°C, medium wear resistance, for linear and rotating dynamic applications.

Turcon®MF4 - performs to 260°C, high wear resistance, for linear and rotating dynamic applications.
