Worldwide seal developer and manufacturer, Busak+Shamban, has pioneered many treatments and coatings to achieve optimum seal performance for specific applications. One treatment, known as DF, isproving successful in ensuring the smooth operation of automotive interior components.
Door mechanisms, storage compartments and interior features with movement, are required to operate smoothly. To achieve this, O-Rings are used in the components, to act as a damper, stopping the
component snapping back into place after use. However, the friction characteristics of a standard elastomer O-Ring are not good enough for this application and do not give a controlled movement,
instead causing the part to stick.
O-Rings are therefore coated or treated to improve friction properties but sometimes these are too good, meaning the components still snap back, or they are not good enough to reduce the sticking
effect. Busak+Shamban has provided a solution with a surface treatment that achieves optimum friction characteristics to give smooth controlled movement.
Busak+Shamban is a leader in surface coating and treatment technology for seals and has identified many formulations to enhance the performance of their seals. They worked with vehicle designers to identify the optimum O-Ring coating/ treatment combination for release mechanism applications. After tests were undertaken on a number of coated and treated O-Rings, Busak+Shamban engineers identified the DF surface modification as having the ideal performance characteristics for these applications.
In these circumstances, the higher coefficient of friction of the DF treatment compared to a coating, proved an advantage, giving it the best possible degree of friction reduction to allow a controlled smooth movement. In addition, no deterioration of operation was likely over time, as no coating layer existed that could be rubbed from the surface.
Busak+Shamban O-Rings with DF treatment are now successfully acting as dampers on release mechanism applications on major car models worldwide.
