Sealing within FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) units is a major challenge to the industry. The difficult environment of seawater and ocean movements increase seal degradation and the possibility of leakage. This is not acceptable from both a production and environmental viewpoint.
Sealing and bearing solutions specially developed by Busak+Shamban are proven to withstand conditions in FPSO applications. These include sealing arrangements using Turcon® Roto Glyd Ring®, Turcon® Stepseal®, Turcon® Variseal® and high performance Isolast® Perfluoroelastomer O-Rings.
An application Busak+Shamban engineers have focused on is sealing within the turret equipment on FPSO vessels. Here sealing arrangements are engineered to eliminate the ingress of water and include bearings designed to withstand the strong equipment forces created by sea swell. The composite bearing material, Orkot®TLM, has been very successful in this application, proving to be corrosion resistant and to have excellent wear characteristics.

Orkot® bearing materials are also used on other FPSO equipment including fairleads on mooring systems. These keep the vessel in a stationary position above the subsea wellheads. They are fitted with high-load bearings which are required to resist the breaking force of the chain, reaching up to 1,700 tons.
Orkot®TLM Marine Bearings are ideal for this difficult application as they are able to operate without lubrication, do not swell in seawater and minimise maintenance over the working life of the FPSO.
