| Definition | Also called India Rubber or gum rubber or caoutchouc, an elastomer obtained from the latex sap of trees, particularly of the genera Hevea and Ficus; latex is a milky colloid with the organic compound polyisoprene, an elastic polymer, as its main ingredient. Latex must be refined and vulcanized before it can be used commercially. |
